I am learning that most of my friends and family are . . . curious. . . . about WHY I am doing an IRONMAN (2012). . . . . again (2014). . . . . I'm sure some days I will have the same questions, so here is an honest look into who I am - what is motivating me, what my goals are, and how I get from HERE to IRONMAN in 52 weeks . . . enjoy the ride!

Letting Beauty Speak Up Itself

So, I went to my first 'cross-fit' class in August. . . . . . It was SOO hard, I failed miserably. . . and so I went back for more.

I still find cross-fit hard, challenging, I am terrible at it, and every time I go, I FAIL . . . and so I will continue to go back for more.

One of the first times I went to cross-fit, the coach told me - "success in here looks like failure."  I knew at that moment I was in the right place.

I think this is beautiful.

Failure

Well, as I read this blog - it could have been me. . . . . although this is her story, is is also MY story.

My first Marathon. . . .

In only 6 more days, I will have run my first marathon.

It is true.

Many people think I run marathons all the time - but the truth of the matter is this -

I am nervous

I am unsure if I can do this.

Actually, I know I can do this, but I feel like I am getting slower and weaker - those are not 2 words that anyone should be telling themselves 6 days before running a marathon.

I am pretty sure that I need a trainer in my life - just to help with the positive self talk that I need desperately!

Epic moment - This is why.

She is me (You need to click on the link to watch this epic video!)

This is why I do what I do.
This is why I did an Ironman.
This is why I will train to do another Ironman.
This video nails it.  Completely.

When I was getting ready for Ironman, you worry about every detail, because most details really do matter - like what seat is on your bike, because when you are on your bike for A LONG time (112 miles), a little agitation can become a big problem . . . Well, I experimented with my bike seat, and bike shorts, and finally found the perfect combination for me.

Thank you Cobb Cycle.
For a great ride.  And an epic video.
One that I can't seem to watch enough times.

It is time to conquer myself

"Brave" - Action Item

This just showed up in my blog post drafts - - - Thank you Duane!

YOU GOTTA BE BRAVE!!

I love it!!

The plan is coming together . . .

Today I went for my first brick workout OUTSIDE!  I rode my bike on the highway - it felt good!  A little wobbly, but good.  I came home and quickly headed out for a short run, when a neighbor kid said to me " are you training?"  I replied enthusiastically "I'm ALWAYS training!"  She was confused, but I think it is true - I think that we always need to be training - not necessarily for a marathon, or an Ironman, but working towards a goal, with a plan, getting stronger.  It's what makes us truly happy.

Well, 2013 is rolling along, it now feels like spring, and without hardly realizing what has happened . . The training season is now upon me!!

The Moonlight Run - came and went - I was not feeling very ready - - - but it's how it is.... my training and my eating has been far from ideal. . . but I ran it anyways - eek . . . time to WAKE UP - and pay the price - which I did - sigh!

A month ago, I went snowshoeing with some ladies in our community, and my mom came too - it was an absolutely beautiful day - - While driving home, I saw a friend of mine on the road, riding his bike home from Waterton - I was quite jealous.  It made my re-think again what I want to accomplish this year. . . . I talked it over with my mom, and when I came home, Duane and I discussed it again, and I finally signed up for my first marathon!  Well, second if you want to count Ironman - which I do, but my first ONLY marathon. . . nervous and excited...

So I think this is what my 2013 good time schedule is looking like . . . (doesn't that look like a good time?!?! - I think it does!)

October 5 - Slam the Dam 8 K swim - Las Vegas OR Swim Vacation at Lake Powell hmmm

I am still hoping to fit in long bike race/ride with Jack this season . . . . the schedule is feeling busy - - - but I have to remember that is how I roll - I actually roll better this way. . . . (now I shrug)

The New Normal

Why is it so hard to find the new normal?

It really is.

So, I have been asked to speak to the grade 7 & 8 girls at our middle school here in Cardston.  About having goals, and reaching goals, and Ironman, and I am not sure what else..... not knowing exactly what they want me to talk about is stressing me out a bit ( ok, a WHOLE LOT).

My husband has made some major changes in his life.  His primary focus these days is taking care of 'his health'.  In the last 28 days, he has lost 30lbs - he is doing amazing.  We are digging deep and talking about tough stuff; our environment, making changes, being dealt the obesity card in life, how to teach our children without pushing them over the edge, knowing our limits, the list goes on and on.

It is good.  He likes spontaneity, I like consistency.  He does things his way, I do things mine, how do we function together?  We are learning.  It is exhausting.  There are 5 more unique individuals living in our house too.  Did I mention it is exhausting?  Sometimes I wish I could just sleep till spring.  I guess I wish I could hibernate.

We went and saw Ali Zentner a couple of weeks ago at Chapters in Lethbridge.  She was doing a book signing, and we got to have a great visit with her.  It buoyed us both up.  It gave me hope that we are doing the right things.  She reminded me to just be me, and to keep on keeping on.  Sigh.  It's harder than it sounds sometimes.  Especially these days.

I watched this video today - It was really good.  I blogged about it on my music blog, here.

Cross Training

I have been holding onto this post in hopes to add pictures. . .then I forgot about the post, but I just need to get it posted - I may add pictures later - I may not - time will tell!

What a GREAT week of Cross Training!

When we were in Missoula, I bought my first pair of cross-country skis.  Not having cross-county skied since I was about 12, it may have been a bit reckless -

What if I hated it?  Stress!

Tuesday had arrived, the kids went back to school and Karen and Michelle were ready to GO!

I was pretty nervous!
I only fell 3 times, and I could get up quickly by the 3rd fall.

Yeah! I didn't hate it!  What a relief!

It was harder than I thought it would be - I worked hard, but I was SOLD!

Friday finally came, so Duane and I went on a date to the mountains- back to Cameron Lake for a night time cross country ski / snowshoe date .  . . . . we were in awe with the cold starry night.

Saturday jobs were done (mostly) and we took the family back to Cameron for another snowshoe, cross-country ski activity!  The little ones dragged their feet, whined and complained, wanting to lay in the snow every couple of minutes - but FAMILY FUN TIME was had - at least that is what we kept telling them, and I believe that they will only remember the FUN!

What a great week of Cross-country skiing - 3 times in one week - man I am a lucky girl - I am getting a little better every time!  Maybe I can keep up with Karen and Michelle by the end of the season!

I am trying to get my head around my race plans for 2013, and I seem to be spinning with too many possibilities, not enough time and still trying to leave time open for the husband and the kids!!!
Oh the dilemma....

New Year's Eve - the last day of 2012

We got our buttons - Here we GO!

Our New Year's Day Costco lunch . . . . interesting . . . .
seaweed, jalapeƱo/garlic stuffed olives, smoothie and  . . . wait for it . . . . coconut cookies!
Our New Years Eve Festivities in Missoula began with checking out the ice sculpture - put on by the culinary arts team - it was cool ( ha ha).

Interesting to see how they used an iron to 'shine' up the sculpture.
We will have to come back later and see how the lights and packed snow look in the dark!

Giant Ice Utensils!  Still Cool!

Then off to the mall to decorate a New Year's Hat!!  Glitter and glue, stickers, jewels and feathers - SO FESTIVE!

Kate is ready to bring in the New Year!

Clara - looking the part!
Lovely Mary!

Off to the Carousel.  We LOVE the carousel!  So many great memories!  Jack even got the gold ring - winning himself a free ride for next time!  So Fun!

Check out the looks of anticipation!

Then we stood in line for not TOO long ( but it was chilly) for pony rides.  Kate was priceless!

Kate riding on "Frosty".  Mary rode on "Molly", and Clara got to ride "Rony".
Then we went over to the University to see the Butterfly and insect house, then balloon animals, bubbles and spinning art.  We even saw an accomplished harpist who was only 16 years old.  Amazing.

Finally to "The Peak" for our Prediction Run.  This is how it worked - you predict your time for a 2 mile run.  You are not allowed to use any timing devices . . . the timing clock is covered up . . . you run around the track 16 laps . . . you need someone to count your laps . . .

Our predicted times were:

Emma  15:52
Jack  18:47
Clara  23:29
Mary  30:14
Kate  38:00
Mom  18:57

Nice Form Emma!

Kate was BRAVE even when she was tired and she thought her foot was bleeding!
It never was bleeding, but she thought it was!

Mary was a MACHINE!!

We are all done - cheering on Emma who is running with the FAST group!!  Way to go Emma!

Feeling GREAT being finished!
Our actual times were:

Emma  16:06
Jack  17:39
Clara  20:24
Mary  22:58
Kate  40:20
Mom  19:06

The winner of the evening was 4 seconds from their predicted time - my 9 second difference didn't win me any prizes, but we still all had a GREAT time.

There was a give-a-way table with shirts and bags and stuff - so we all came home with SWAG and great memories!

This painting was in the lobby of the Peak Fitness Center - and I LOVED it!
I just thought I would share it with you.

To end the evening we went to the Mackenzie River Pizza Company for a late dinner.  We tried some 'gluten free' pizza.  It was good.

Once we made it back to the hotel, Jack finally got to open his iPad that he bought with money he has been saving. . . . patiently.  He would say. . .  "It was totally worth it!"

It was great to celebrate the end of 2012 and the excitement of a new and upcoming 2013!

Happy New Year!
